Overview

gene-archive is an MIT-licensed generator for family history websites. It brings an interactive tree, biographies, source documents, photographs, family stories and a places map into one site. You own the data in a JSON file, can import and export GEDCOM, and can host the generated HTML without a database. An optional Python server adds comments and a browser editor. The interface supports English, Russian and Romanian.

Description

For families, genealogists and developers who want to publish family research on their own website. Person cards connect dates and places to the documents behind them; the archive presents scans, photographs and PDF previews alongside transcriptions. Family stories and a Leaflet/OpenStreetMap map add context to the tree. Data lives in one JSON file, with GEDCOM import and export for exchanging research. Generated static HTML works on GitHub Pages or any web server. For collaborative work, the optional Python server provides comments, correction proposals and an online editor with editor/administrator roles, validation and change history in git. Requires Python 3.10+. MIT license; English and Russian documentation. A fictional demonstration family is available at https://igormel81.github.io/gene_archive/ .
